Midsomer Norton is a market town in north-east Somerset, located approximately 10 miles south-west of Bath and close to the eastern edge of the Mendip Hills National Landscape. The town forms part of the historic Somerset coalfield area and sits within the unitary authority of Bath and North East Somerset Council.
Midsomer Norton lies alongside neighbouring communities including Radstock, Paulton and Westfield, collectively forming an important local commercial and residential area between Bath and the Mendips. The town retains its traditional market town character while benefiting from modern transport links to Bath, Bristol, and surrounding Somerset settlements.
The town centre includes a mix of independent retailers, cafés, professional services, supermarkets, and community facilities serving both local residents and nearby rural villages. Midsomer Norton also provides access to countryside walking routes and green spaces across the Somerset countryside.
Although no longer connected to the national rail network, the town remains accessible via the A367 linking Bath with south Somerset and the wider region.
Midsomer Norton has a history stretching back to at least the Iron Age and developed over centuries as a rural market settlement. The town was originally known as Norton Canonicorum before becoming Midsomer Norton, with the “Midsomer” element believed to reference the feast day of the parish church’s patron saint, John the Baptist, celebrated on Midsummer’s Day.
The growth of coal mining across the Somerset coalfield transformed the local economy during the 18th and 19th centuries. Improved transport infrastructure, including the arrival of the railways, enabled large-scale coal extraction and distribution from the area.
Mining became one of the dominant industries in Midsomer Norton and neighbouring towns for much of the industrial period. The town’s railway connections played a significant role in supporting both industry and trade until the decline of coal mining during the mid-20th century. By the 1960s, local mines had closed and the town’s railway stations were subsequently shut.
Following the decline of mining, Midsomer Norton diversified into retail, printing, business services, and light industry. The town continues to serve as an important local employment and service centre for surrounding Somerset communities.

Radstock is a town in north-east Somerset within the unitary authority area of Bath and North East Somerset Council. Located approximately 8 miles south-west of Bath and 8 miles north-west of Frome, Radstock forms part of the wider Norton Radstock urban area alongside Midsomer Norton.
The town lies within the historic Somerset coalfield region and sits close to the eastern edge of the Mendip Hills National Landscape. Radstock has increasingly developed into a commuter location for both Bath and Bristol, while continuing to serve surrounding rural communities across north-east Somerset.
Modern Radstock combines residential neighbourhoods with retail, business services, and local employment areas. Nearby communities include Westfield, Paulton and Peasedown St John. The town also benefits from access to countryside routes including Colliers Way, a popular walking and cycling path following former railway corridors through the Somerset coalfield.
The Norton Radstock area is twinned with Ambarès-et-Lagrave in France, reflecting longstanding international links.
Radstock has a history of settlement dating back to the Iron Age, although its strategic importance increased significantly during the Roman period with the construction of the Fosse Way, which passed directly through the area along the route now followed in part by the A367.
The town expanded rapidly during the Industrial Revolution as coal mining developed across the Somerset coalfield. Coal and coke extraction in and around Radstock became a major local industry from the 18th century onwards, supporting employment, transport, and associated industries throughout the region.
Radstock’s industrial importance led both the Great Western Railway and the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway to establish stations in the town, enabling coal distribution across southern England.
Mining activity gradually declined during the 20th century, with the final local coal mines closing in 1973. Former spoil heaps and industrial landscapes were later reclaimed, including the site at Writhlington, now designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its geological significance.
Following the decline of mining and rail freight, Radstock increasingly transitioned into a residential and commuter town while retaining strong links to its industrial heritage. Former railway lines have since been redeveloped into recreational routes including Colliers Way, linking Dundas Aqueduct with Frome.

Paulton is a large village in north-east Somerset located to the north of the Mendip Hills National Landscape within the unitary authority area of Bath and North East Somerset Council. Positioned between Bath and Frome, the village forms part of the wider Somerset coalfield region alongside nearby communities including Midsomer Norton, Radstock and High Littleton.
Paulton has developed from its industrial mining origins into a substantial residential village with local retail, schools, healthcare facilities, and community amenities serving surrounding rural areas. The village retains a strong local identity and includes designated conservation areas recognised for their historic and architectural importance.
The area benefits from road connections via the A367 and nearby routes towards Bath, Bristol, and south Somerset. Access to countryside walking and cycling routes across the former Somerset coalfield also contributes to the village’s appeal.
Paulton’s industrial heritage is closely connected to coal mining within the historic Somerset coalfield. Evidence of this legacy remains visible today, including the large spoil heap known locally as “The Batch”, a landmark mound formed from mining waste and often described as resembling a volcano.
During the Industrial Revolution, the Somerset Coal Canal terminated at Paulton and became a major transport link for the local mining industry. More than 15 collieries around Paulton, Timsbury and High Littleton were connected to the canal by tramroads, enabling coal distribution across the region.
The village also became associated with large-scale printing and publishing. In 1839, Charles Dando Purnell established a family printing business which expanded operations across Radstock, Paulton, and Midsomer Norton. Purnell & Sons became internationally known for bible publishing and at its peak was one of Europe’s largest printing firms, employing around 2,000 people across the area.
Although industrial employment declined during the late 20th century, the village retains many reminders of its mining and manufacturing past. Local memorials commemorate residents who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars, including a memorial marking the site where 23 men died in a 1944 military glider crash en route from RAF Keevil to Arnhem during the Second World War.
Today, Paulton continues to serve as an important residential and local service centre within north-east Somerset.
