Test chemical solutions in a hidden area.

As with all chemical solutions on different fibres, there are opportunities for mishaps to occur. The best way to prevent any catastrophic mistakes happening is to test patch the solution on a hidden, small area of the carpet. Follow the manufacturer instructions correctly for true results.

Rubber squeegee to tackle stubborn fur.

Furry pets are a part of the family. However, their shedding fur can be an unwanted guest. Sometimes, even after a good vacuum, not every hair is picked up. A quick, thorough way to catch pet fur is to take rubber glass squeegee and ‘rake’ the carpet. Start with the squeegee away and drag towards you. Lift and repeat. You’ll be amazed by the results.

Use baking soda on musky smelling carpets.

Do you have a funky smelling carpet? Everyday living with a busy family and pets can soon leave your carpet not so fresh. A quick way to tackle this problem is with a kitchen cupboard staple. Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda liberally over the carpet and leave for 20-30 minutes. This will give the bicarbonate of soda plenty of time to absorb the odours. Hoover the carpet thoroughly, leaving you with a fresh and rejuvenated carpet.

Regularly change your beater bar

When your vacuum isn’t treated well, it doesn’t perform well. Regular vacuum maintenance is vital to keep your vacuum working to its fullest potential. One of the biggest things to affect your vacuum’s performance is the beater bar brush on the underside of the vacuum. Over time the bristles on the brush get damaged and worn down. That’s on top of all the hair and debris that gets trapped and builds upon the bar. Regular debris removal will help keep it working for longer, however, it will need replacing eventually.

Regularly empty the dust compartment.

Whether your vacuum uses bags or is bagless, to keep your vacuum picking up dirt you need to regularly empty your vacuum. It can be mistaken that you only need to empty the debris from your vacuum when the bag or compartment is full. However, when space is full the debris being picked up doesn’t have space to circulate. When a bag or container is too full, you can even find that debris will empty out on to the carpet. The best time to empty the bag or container is when it is 2/3 full, giving the debris plenty of space to circulate whilst keeping the suction efficiency at its best.

No shoes on the carpet.

This isn’t just good manners, it can go a long way towards keeping your carpets dirt and bacteria free. We walk on so many different surfaces every day. Even walking through some leaves on the pavement can contain all sorts. A doormat at all entrances will help remove some of the outside dirt and debris, however, the best solution is to remove shoes completely before walking through the home.

Use rugs in high traffic areas.

High traffic areas include places such as entrances, hallways, in front of seating etc. These are the places that see a lot of feet action on a daily basis. After a while, the fibres and pile in the carpet can start to become thread-bare and sparse. A great way to tackle this problem and protect your carpet is to use mats and rugs. Not only does this protect your carpet, it can bring a great warmth and style to your home.

Pre-treat stubborn stains

If you have a commercial carpet cleaner, pre-treat any stubborn stains with your preferred carpet stain remover as per product instructions. Sometimes a shampoo and water aren’t enough to remove stains and can require extra effort. If after you’ve shampooed your carpet there are still stains, it may be worth calling in the professionals. We here at ACS Specialist Cleaning use a hot detergent extraction method that forces the stain out of the fibres.

Treat spills as soon as possible.

When you notice a spill or stain, it is important to treat it right away. It is far easier to treat them wet than dry. When the soiled area has dried there is more chance of the offending substance seeping deep into the pile and causing more damage. The best thing to do is blot, not rub the area with a clean absorbent tissue or towel. Rubbing the area may cause the stain to spread and embed itself further.
