About Swindon

Swindon is a large town in Wiltshire, England, located towards the north of the county close to the border with Gloucestershire. It lies between the major cities of Bristol and London, making it an important commercial and transport hub within the South West.
The town sits on the edge of the Cotswolds and is well connected via the M4 motorway, which has played a significant role in its modern expansion. Swindon railway station is on the Great Western Main Line, providing direct services to London Paddington, Bristol, and South Wales.
Swindon is known for its strong industrial and engineering heritage, particularly linked to the historic Great Western Railway works, which were once a major employer in the town. Today, the redeveloped Railway Village and the STEAM Museum of the Great Western Railway reflect this legacy and attract visitors.
The town is also home to the Swindon Designer Outlet, one of the largest covered outlet shopping centres in Europe, drawing visitors from across Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, and beyond. Nearby attractions include Lydiard Park and Coate Water Country Park, offering green space and leisure facilities.
Swindon is twinned with several towns across Europe, reflecting its international links and post-war development as an expanding urban centre.
History
Although Swindon existed as a small market settlement for centuries, its major growth began in the 19th century with the arrival of the Great Western Railway. The construction of the railway works in the 1840s transformed the town into a major industrial centre, attracting workers from across the UK.
The railway village, built to house workers and their families, formed the basis of modern Swindon. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the town continued to expand rapidly as railway engineering and associated industries developed.
Following the decline of railway manufacturing in the mid-20th century, Swindon underwent significant economic restructuring. Its designation as an expansion town in the 1950s and 1960s led to further population growth, with new housing and infrastructure developed to support incoming residents and businesses.
Today, Swindon has a diverse economy including manufacturing, logistics, retail, and financial services, with several national and international companies operating in the area.
