Things to Ask a Gardener

The outside space on a property is just as important as the inside when it comes to making the most of it and enjoying it. Outside it’s certainly worth investing in the services of a landscape gardener. In the long run it will make maintaining the grounds far easier and provide you with an attractive, well-laid out space where you can relax and entertain, adding value to the property.

Unfortunately, there are many things that can go wrong if you hire a landscape gardener who doesn’t really know the trade and does a poor standard of work. This is compounded by the fact that seeing as gardens take time to grow, the problems may not be apparent immediately on completion of the work, but only show up over time after the “cowboy” landscaper has long disappeared.

You can avoid your dream garden growing into a nightmare landscape by making sure you hire a landscape gardener who is professional with a proven track record for great results, and preferably familiar with conditions in your local area.

Forewarned is fore-armed, so the best protection of your investment in the long term is to take great care when choosing a landscape gardener to undertake your project.

Things to ask when hiring a landscape gardener:

  • It’s preferable to find a landscape gardening contractor who belongs to, or who is endorsed by, a professional organisation which vets members and provides them with ongoing training. This way you can make sure you find a reputable company and have recourse if they don’t come up to scratch.

Professional organisations for the garden landscaping industry include The Association of Professional Landscapers and the British Association of Landscape Industries. If you’re looking for a company which offers specialist design and build services, you can consult the Society of Garden Designers.

  • Local landscapers advertising their services may not be able to afford membership of a certification scheme or professional body, but may still be very competent and reputable. Check their online reviews, pictures of completed projects and ask around friends, neighbours and family members for recommendations. When engaging with the company, ask about their qualifications and experience, with proof if necessary.

  • A competent garden landscaper should offer a free consultation at which you will be able to share what you require. It’s also an opportunity to assess the landscaper’s enthusiasm and passion for the work, and judge whether he/she is good at listening to your ideas. The impression the landscaper makes at your first meeting is a good indicator of whether he/she is truly interested in the project, or just in it for the money.

  • Have a realistic budget in mind and make it plain to the landscaper. When you ask for a quotation (and you should get at least three) make sure you know just what is covered in the price – from a design fee if required, to plants, materials and labour.

  • Make sure you have a contract in writing, including the payment schedule (deposit up front to final payment on completion), a time schedule and specifications for materials and other items to be used.

  • Check that your landscape gardener has a genuine street address and phone/mobile number, so you always get in contact when necessary. It’s also worth checking on Companies House how long the firm has been in business.

  • It’s important to get assurances from your landscape gardener about where any garden waste materials generated during the project are going to be recycled or disposed of. You don’t want to end up being a party to fly-tipping!

In general you can’t go wrong when hiring a landscape gardener if you follow the checking and vetting protocol you’d use in hiring any professional contractor. Get it right and you’ll enjoy your beautiful outdoor space for many years to
