Sherborne is an affluent historic market town in north-west Dorset, situated on the River Yeo and the A30, on the eastern edge of the Blackmore Vale. It lies approximately 6 miles east of Yeovil, 18 miles west of Shaftesbury, 15 miles north of Dorchester and around 20 miles south of Frome, positioning it within comfortable reach of key towns across Dorset, Somerset and south Wiltshire.
Sherborne railway station sits on the London Waterloo to Exeter main line, shared with Gillingham to the east, providing direct services towards Salisbury and London in one direction and Yeovil, Taunton and Exeter in the other. This rail connectivity, combined with the town’s beauty and heritage, makes Sherborne a popular destination for weekend visitors from London and the South East. The A30 also provides a practical east-west road corridor linking the town to the wider region.
The town is renowned for its abbey, two castles, a Jacobean manor house and several distinguished private schools, many constructed in the warm golden Ham stone characteristic of this part of the Somerset and Dorset border. Sherborne is a founding member of the Douzelage, a European town twinning association currently comprising around 24 towns across EU member states.
The town takes its name from the Saxon “scir burne,” meaning clear stream, and served as the capital of Wessex, one of the seven kingdoms of Anglo-Saxon England. King Alfred, who was educated in Sherborne, maintained a close association with the town throughout his reign.
The abbey began as a Saxon cathedral before becoming a Benedictine monastery and later a parish church, and remains one of the finest examples of Perpendicular Gothic architecture in the South West. The original castle was built by Roger de Caen, Bishop of Salisbury and Chancellor of the Exchequer, as a fortified palace and is now managed by English Heritage. Sir Walter Raleigh later constructed a new Elizabethan mansion within the old castle’s parkland, known today as Sherborne Castle. The town’s educational tradition stretches back to the time of Alfred the Great and today encompasses four independent schools and an international school.
Today, Sherborne continues to attract residents, visitors and businesses drawn by its outstanding architectural heritage, strong educational offer and excellent rail links, cementing its reputation as one of the most desirable market towns in the South West.

Milborne Port is a village in the south-east corner of Somerset, sitting close to the Dorset border and approximately 2 miles east of Sherborne. It lies around 8 miles south-west of Wincanton, 10 miles north of Sherborne’s railway connection on the Waterloo to Exeter line, and within easy reach of the A30, which provides the principal road corridor linking the village westward to Yeovil and eastward towards Shaftesbury and Salisbury. The A303, accessible a short distance to the north near Wincanton, offers onward connections to London and the wider South West.
The village sits on the banks of the River Gascoigne, also known locally as the River Ivel or River Yeo, surrounded by the green pastoral countryside characteristic of this part of the Somerset and Dorset border. Despite its present-day village character, Milborne Port was historically one of the most significant settlements in Somerset, a status reflected in its architecture and heritage.
Although never a borough or shire town in the formal sense, Milborne Port carried considerable importance during the Saxon period, operating as a mint town between 997 AD and 1035 AD – contemporary with the reign of King Canute – and producing coinage that circulated across the kingdom.
The village later developed into a notable centre for glove and leather manufacturing, an industry closely associated with this part of Somerset and neighbouring Dorset. The trade supported the local economy for several centuries before the final factory closed in 1970, reflecting the broader decline of rural craft industries across the region during the latter half of the 20th century.
Ven House, a fine Georgian mansion within the village, was built in 1700 and subsequently extended in 1725 for James Medleycott. The property remained in the Medleycott family for more than 250 years and stands as one of the most notable historic buildings in this part of Somerset.
Today, Milborne Port retains its quiet village character while benefiting from its proximity to Sherborne’s shops, services and rail links, making it an attractive location for those seeking a rural Somerset setting within easy reach of the wider road and rail network of the South West.
