Frome is one of the largest towns in Somerset, located approximately 13 miles south of Bath and close to the eastern edge of the Mendip Hills National Landscape. The town sits on the River Frome, with much of the historic centre positioned within a valley surrounded by rolling countryside and hills.
Frome has experienced significant population growth over recent decades while retaining a strong independent identity and a well-preserved historic character. Large parts of the town centre fall within a conservation area, and Frome contains a substantial number of listed buildings, many dating from the period when the town was a major centre of the wool and cloth trade.
The town is well connected to surrounding areas including Trowbridge, Warminster, Bradford-on-Avon and Bristol. Rail services from Frome railway station provide connections towards Bath, Bristol, Salisbury and London.
Modern Frome has developed a strong reputation for independent retail, arts, food markets, and creative industries. The town hosts regular markets and cultural events, including the well-known Frome Independent market, attracting visitors from across Somerset, Wiltshire, and the wider South West.
Frome is twinned with Château-Gontier in France and Murrhardt in Germany, reflecting longstanding European links.
The name Frome is believed to derive from the Old English word “ffraw”, meaning fair, brisk, or flowing, describing the nearby river.
Between approximately 950 AD and 1650, Frome was larger and more commercially significant than Bath. The town originally developed around the wool and cloth industry, becoming one of the leading manufacturing centres in Somerset during the medieval and early modern periods.
From the 16th to 18th centuries, Frome experienced considerable prosperity through textile production and trade. The town became known for woollen cloth manufacturing, supported by local water power and trade links across southern England.
As the textile industry declined during the Industrial Revolution, Frome diversified into engineering, metal-working, printing, and other manufacturing sectors. Many industrial buildings from this period remain part of the town’s built landscape today.
During the 20th and 21st centuries, Frome evolved into a mixed economy centred on retail, professional services, creative industries, and tourism, while continuing to preserve its historic character and strong community identity.
The town is also known as the birthplace of Jenson Button, the 2009 Formula One World Champion.
