Nailsea is a commuter town in Somerset within the unitary authority area of North Somerset Council. Located approximately 8 miles south-west of Bristol and around 11 miles north-east of Weston-super-Mare, the town forms part of the wider Bristol travel-to-work area and is popular with commuters working across Bristol and the surrounding region.
Nailsea lies close to neighbouring communities including Backwell, Yatton, Clevedon and Portishead. The town benefits from strong transport links via the nearby M5 motorway and rail connections from Nailsea and Backwell railway station on the Bristol to Exeter line.
The town is characterised by the local pennant sandstone used in many historic buildings throughout the area. Nailsea town centre supports a regular weekly market on Fridays, a smaller Tuesday market, and a monthly farmers’ and craft market held on the third Saturday of each month. These markets attract visitors from across North Somerset and surrounding Bristol suburbs.
Modern Nailsea combines residential neighbourhoods with local retail, leisure, and community facilities. The town has expanded significantly since the mid-20th century while retaining a distinct identity separate from nearby Bristol.
Nailsea’s early economy was based largely on coal mining, with extraction taking place from at least the 16th century. Coal from local pits was transported to nearby Yatton to fuel lime kilns and other industries. By the late 18th century, numerous collieries operated around Nailsea, although the industry gradually declined and the final pit closed in 1882.
In 1788, glass manufacturing became established in the town and developed into one of the largest industries of its kind in Britain. The Nailsea Glass Works eventually became the fourth largest glassworks in the United Kingdom before closing in 1873. Decorative “Nailsea glass”, often produced by workers at the end of shifts using leftover coloured glass, remains highly collectable and is recognised internationally.
During the 20th century, Nailsea transitioned from an industrial settlement into a residential and commuter town, particularly following improved transport connections to Bristol and the wider South West.

Backwell is a large village and civil parish in North Somerset, located approximately 7 miles south-west of Bristol on the A370 between Bristol and Weston-super-Mare. Positioned within the Bristol commuter belt, Backwell is a popular residential location offering convenient access to both the city and the wider South West region.
The village lies close to neighbouring communities including Nailsea, Yatton and Long Ashton. Backwell benefits from strong transport connections, with nearby access to the M5 motorway and rail services from Nailsea and Backwell railway station on the Great Western Main Line route linking Bristol with Exeter and the South West.
Despite its proximity to Bristol, Backwell retains a distinct village identity with a traditional high street and a strong local community. The village supports a range of independent businesses and everyday amenities including a post office, bakery, pharmacy, grocery store, cafés, hairdressers, and local service providers. Leisure and recreational facilities include sports clubs, parks, and a public swimming pool, contributing to the area’s popularity with families and commuters.
Backwell is also known for its well-regarded schools and surrounding countryside, with easy access to rural walking routes across North Somerset and towards the Mendip Hills.
Backwell has a long recorded history and appears in the Domesday Book under the name “Bacoile”, believed to mean “the well back on the hill”. The historic well associated with the village name still exists today.
The village developed gradually around farming and local trade, later expanding due to improved road and rail connections with Bristol. Many older buildings remain throughout the parish, contributing to Backwell’s historic character.
St Andrew’s Church dates largely from the 12th century and has undergone several alterations and extensions over the centuries. The church retains its original font, while the tower houses a ring of eight bells, including two medieval bells of significant historic interest.
During the 20th century, Backwell evolved into a desirable residential village while maintaining much of its rural setting and historic identity.
