Every year, English Heritage sites across Wiltshire and Somerset host a variety of special events during the winter months. At Dentons.net, we’ve put together a guide to events across the south west this coming winter season. This page will provide you with information and links to some of the most exciting English Heritage events that will be taking place in Wiltshire and Somerset this winter.
Winter Solstice at Stonehenge
One of the most popular English Heritage events in the winter is the Winter Solstice at Stonehenge. This event takes place on the shortest day of the year, around December 21st or 22nd. On this day, thousands of people gather at Stonehenge to witness the sunrise over the Heel Stone. The Winter Solstice is a time of celebration and reflection, and it is a truly magical experience.
The Stonehenge monument is aligned with the sun, so that just twice a year – coinciding with the Winter and Summer solstices, the sun rises directly over the Heel Stone – the large stone that stands just outside the inner circle of stones.
It may be chilly out, but each year crowds of people gather at Stonehenge to watch the sun rise, symbolising the turning of the year from the short dark days of winter to lighter ones, as the countdown begins to spring, the season of renewal. The festive atmosphere brings echoes of ancient days when it is believed winter solstice feasts, ceremonies and celebrations were held across the Stonehenge landscape.

Festival of Light at Longleat
Longleat is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the UK, and it is even more magical at Christmastime. The estate is decorated with thousands of lights, and there is a stunning Christmas tree in the Long Gallery. There is also a Santa’s Grotto, where children can meet Father Christmas, and a Christmas market with a variety of festive stalls.
Journey through time and discover the wonders of the prehistoric world! Our spectacular lantern trail takes you on an epic adventure from the age of dinosaurs to the present day. See history come to life with kings and queens, a giant 12-meter clock, and the dazzling colours of The Arabian Nights. Don’t miss the incredible House light show celebrating Longleat’s 75th anniversary.

Winter Wonderland at Avebury
Avebury is another popular English Heritage site, and it is transformed into a Winter Wonderland during the festive season. Why not indulge in a spot of Christmas shopping and support local makers with a range of handmade goods on offer at the Christmas market, all set within the atmospheric seventeenth century threshing barn.
There is also a Santa’s Grotto, where children can meet the traditional St. Nicholas, hear a magical Christmas story and receive a special Christmas gift. Alternatively join an expert archaeologist for a winter walk around the iconic Avebury stones. Leave the crowds behind and learn about the prehistory of this enigmatic site. Dr. Nick Snashall, National Trust Archaeologist for the Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site will lead the walks on December 9th and 13th.
