Familiar to most of us the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) rescues animals from cruelty and neglect, rehabilitates them and rehomes or releases them where possible. The society also campaigns for animal welfare issues, investigates cases of harm to animals prosecutes offenders. It takes public donations and funding to achieve everything they do for vulnerable animals.

The Salvation Army opened one of the first ever charity shops, back in the 1800s, to provide affordable clothes for the poor. There are now more than 400 Salvation Army charity shops across the country selling bargains and collectables of good quality. The Salvation Army is a worldwide Christian church and registered charity which fights against social inequality and takes action by offering friendship, practical help, services and support to disadvantaged people in the community.

This long-established organisation gives palliative care to people with life-limiting illnesses in Weston-Super-Mare and across North Somerset completely free of charge. The charity’s headquarters are in Jackson-Barstow House where there is a 10 bedroom inpatient unit, and a day and wellbeing centre. There is also a team of community nurse specialists who care for patients and their families in their homes in Weston-Super-Mare and the surrounding area.
