Searching dentons.net

How can I find businesses in my area?

There are various ways to find local business information using dentons.net. The easiest way is to use the main search function by entering your search keywords and location into the two fields at the top of each page. Locations can be determined by either entering a UK town, post code or telephone std code. You can use the 'Who or What?' search field either by entering the business type i.e. builders, florists etc, by business name if you know it or by entering a search keyword. dentons.net will intelligently find what you are looking for and display matching results.

Alternatively, you can find business information by browsing our A-Z of Classifications and A-Z UK Locations. Searching dentons.net can be made easier by setting your default location on the home page. This location is then stored with dentons.net meaning all searches will default to your preferred search location.

What's the difference between 'who' or 'what'?

Use the 'Who?' search type if you are looking for the contact details and know the business you are looking for. Use the 'What?' search type if you are looking for a set of search results in your area. For example, if you are looking for a list of local builders or plumbers. Depending on the number of matches to your search we find, you can always tweak the results on the search results page. See Results & Refining Results section for more information.

Why can't I find the right heading?

With a classification database of over 25,000 business types there is always a chance that we store certain headings differently to how you may think to search. You can use the 'Who or What?' search field by entering a search keyword to find results. For example, searching for "paint" will bring results back for 'Painters & Decorators' but we will also let you know of related headings matching "paint" such as Decorators Merchants, Paint Manufacturers or Artists. If you are unsure of the right classification you can always browse our A-Z of Classifications.

How does the AutoSuggest menu work?

The AutoSuggest is a simple drop-down suggestion that aids your search. By typing in three characters into either the 'who or what' or 'location' search fields our intelligent system will try to match what you are looking for to make searching easier and faster. The 'who or what' field will suggest matching classification and business names. The AutoSuggest is there purely as an aid to your search and doesn't have to be used.

Do I have to use the AutoSuggest?

No. The AutoSuggest exists purely to make searching dentons.net easier. If you know the business type or name you are looking for you will more than likely type straight into the search field and ignore the suggestion menu.

Results & Refining Results

What are related headings?

Related headings are alternative headings that match your search criteria and are mostly related by trade. For example, if you search for "builders" we will also present alternative headings such as Building Consultants, Double Glazing and Plumbers.

What are suggested headings?

If you search for a keyword such as "paint" we will suggest headings that match your search word such as Decorators Merchants, Paint Manufacturers, Artists or Art Supplies.

What order are the results listed?

The default order of our results are shown by listing type descending alphabetically. For instance, Premium listings are shown at the top of the search results page and when there are multiple Premium listings they are ordered alphabetically. Enhanced listings are then shown alphabetically followed by our basic listings. You can change the order of results at the top of the search results page by selecting either 'A-Z' which will sort results alphabetically regardless of listing type or by 'Distance' which will show the closest results to your search location first.

How do I make results more specific?

There are many ways to filter the search results that we present. You can either change the way results are ordered (see above question), you could extend the radius of your search to find businesses within a wider area of your search location, or you could choose from one of our related or suggested headings.

Why are there results not in my area?

As an advertiser, businesses can choose to cover a wider area than just their local area. All listings have a default 5 mile radius but they choose to extend this coverage area if necessary. We are confident that our way of delivering results is fair to the businesses that advertise without compromising the accuracy of the presented results.
